The 80/20 Rule: A CPE Strategy You Need

Let’s be honest—most CPAs don’t hate learning. They hate how CPE is usually done.

It’s rushed. It’s last-minute. It’s often low-quality. And worst of all, it rarely translates into anything useful in your actual job.

So every year, the same cycle repeats:
You scramble in Q4, sit through a few forgettable webinars, check the compliance box… and move on.

That’s the default approach.

But the smartest CPAs don’t treat CPE like a requirement. They treat it like a lever.

And they follow a simple principle: the 80/20 rule.

What the 80/20 Rule Looks Like in CPE

The 80/20 rule says that 80% of your results come from 20% of your efforts.

Applied to CPE, it means this:

A small portion of the courses you take will create the majority of your career value.

Most CPE content falls into the “necessary but low-impact” category:

  • Ethics refreshers
  • Regulatory updates
  • Technical compliance topics

Important? Yes.
Career-changing? Not really.

The top 20%, though, is different. These are courses that:

  • Improve how fast you work
  • Make your output more valuable
  • Help you stand out in your role

That’s where the real ROI lives.

The Problem With the “Binge Learning” Approach

If you’re like most professionals, you’ve done this before:

  • Realize you’re behind on hours
  • Block off a Friday (or an entire weekend)
  • Power through 8–16 hours of content

It feels productive in the moment. But a week later?

You remember almost nothing.

This approach fails for two reasons:

1. Low Retention

Cramming information doesn’t lead to long-term learning. It leads to short-term completion.

2. No Application

You’re not giving yourself time to actually use what you learn. And without application, knowledge fades fast.

The result: you meet the requirement—but gain very little.

The “1-Hour Per Week” Strategy

Now let’s flip it.

Instead of bingeing, high-performing CPAs take a consistent, low-friction approach:

One hour per week. Every week.

That’s it.

Over a year, that’s 50+ hours of CPE—without stress, without cramming.

But more importantly, it allows for:

  • Better focus
  • Higher retention
  • Immediate application

You can learn something on Tuesday and use it on Wednesday.

That’s how skills actually stick.

How to Apply the 80/20 Strategy to Your CPE

Here’s how to make your CPE work for you instead of against you.

Step 1: Separate “Required” vs “High-Impact”

Start by dividing your CPE into two categories:

1. Required (the 80%)

  • Ethics courses
  • Compliance updates
  • Industry regulations

Get these done efficiently. Don’t overthink them.

2. High-Impact (the 20%)
This is where you should be intentional.

Focus on skills that:

  • Save time
  • Increase visibility
  • Improve decision-making

Examples:

  • Advanced Excel techniques
  • Data visualization and dashboards
  • AI tools for accounting workflows
  • Business communication and leadership

These are the courses that actually move your career forward.

Step 2: Build a “Skill Stack”

Instead of taking random courses, build a connected skill set.

For example:

  • Start with Excel fundamentals
  • Move into working with messy/downloaded data
  • Then learn Power BI for reporting
  • Layer in AI tools for automation

Now you’re not just completing hours—you’re building capability.

And that capability compounds.

Step 3: Apply What You Learn Immediately

This is the most important (and most ignored) step.

After every course, ask yourself:

“Where can I use this this week?”

Even small applications matter:

  • Automating a repetitive Excel task
  • Cleaning up a report format
  • Creating a simple dashboard
  • Using AI to draft or summarize

This is where learning turns into career leverage.

Step 4: Avoid the “Cheap but Costly” Trap

Free or low-cost webinars can be tempting.

But here’s the tradeoff:

  • They’re often generic
  • They lack depth
  • They’re easy to forget

And your time is more valuable than the price difference.

A better approach:

  • Choose fewer, higher-quality courses
  • Focus on practical, applicable content
  • Prioritize instructors who teach real-world use cases

Because one course you actually use is worth more than five you don’t.

What This Looks Like in Practice

Let’s compare two CPAs:

CPA #1 (Traditional Approach)

  • Completes 40 hours in December
  • Focuses mostly on compliance topics
  • Retains very little
  • Sees no real change in performance

CPA #2 (80/20 Approach)

  • Completes 1 hour per week
  • Mixes required + high-impact learning
  • Applies new skills regularly
  • Improves efficiency and visibility over time

Same requirement. Completely different outcome.

The Real Goal of CPE (That No One Talks About)

CPE isn’t just about maintaining your license.

It’s one of the few built-in opportunities you have each year to:

  • Upgrade your skill set
  • Stay competitive
  • Increase your value in the market

If you treat it like a checkbox, you’ll get checkbox results.

If you treat it like an investment, it will pay you back.

Final Thought

You don’t need more CPE.

You need better CPE strategy.

Stop cramming.
Stop checking boxes.
Start being intentional.

Because the CPAs who get ahead aren’t the ones who complete the most hours—

They’re the ones who make those hours count.
